DIY Chia Pet
Making a DIY Chia Pet with an upside-down bowl and wet paper is a simple way to grow microgreens without needing a traditional terracotta planter. This method uses the wet paper as a "wicking" substrate for the seeds to cling to and grow.
Ingredients
- Ceramic or Plastic Bowl
- Paper Towels
- 1–2 teaspoons Chia Seeds
- Water & Spray Bottle
- A shallow tray or plate
Steps
- Place your bowl upside down on a shallow tray.
- Soak 2–3 layers of paper towels in water. Squeeze out the excess so they are damp but not dripping. Drape them over the bottom of the upside-down bowl, smoothing them out so they stick to the surface.
- Method A (Paste): Mix chia seeds with a small amount of water (roughly a 1:4 ratio) and let it sit for about 10–15 minutes until it forms a thick gel.
- Method B (Sprinkle): Alternatively, you can sprinkle dry seeds directly onto the wet paper towel.
- Gently spread the seed gel (or sprinkle the dry seeds) in a thin, even layer over the paper-covered bowl. Avoid thick clumps, which can lead to mold.
- For the first 2–3 days, cover the bowl with another large bowl or a loose piece of plastic wrap to trap moisture and encourage germination.
- Once sprouts appear, remove the cover. Mist the seeds 3–4 times daily with a spray bottle. Ensure the paper towel never completely dries out.
- Place the bowl in a spot with indirect sunlight. Your "bowl pet" should be fully covered in green sprouts within 7–10 days.
